Going to the dentist can be a frightening experience especially for younger patients. Sedation options are a safe and comfortable way to give your child the dental care they need without the discomfort or anxiety that may come with their treatment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is taken up through inhalation. With nitrous oxide sedation children do not fall asleep. They may experience mild sedation described as a feeling of “floating” or “dreaming”. At the completion of treatment, oxygen is used to offset the effects of nitrous oxide. Recovery is quick so your child can resume normal activities right away.
IV Sedation
IV Sedation, is when medications are delivered directly into the blood stream. The benefit of IV sedation, is that there is an almost immediate effect. With IV sedation your child will undergo a deeper sedation experience, which may cause your child to feel as though they slept through the treatment. The feeling of sleepiness or grogginess may occur for 4-6 hours after treatment is completed.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is typically used only for children who have extensive dental needs and are unable to complete these treatments in the office due to severe dental anxiety. It is also an appropriate option for children with complex medical conditions.
General anesthesia offers a gentle and effective option deliver dental care to children in the nurturing environment of our local hospital where all the treatment is completed while your child is asleep.
If you and your child's dentist determine that general anesthesia is the right type of sedation for your child, the dentist will work in conjunction with your child's pediatrician to ensure your child is safe and well cared for.
